Aftercare Method

The most important part of getting a good tattoo is looking after it properly! Please follow this aftercare correctly. If you have any issues or questions don’t hesitate to contact me at nicole@darkdays.co.nz

1. Remove wrap after 1-2 hours.

2. Give your tattoo a good clean using hot water and soap. In the shower under direct running water is best.

3. Pat dry with a clean towel.

4. Once properly dry, apply a very thin layer your chosen aftercare cream, gently massage into the skin.

Repeat steps (2-4) 3 times a day for the first 3 days. Reduce to 1-2 times a day for the rest of the week.

Important

  • Your skin may feel hot/swollen during the first 48 hours - try to rest the area if possible. This is your body starting to heal.

  • During the first 3 days of healing your tattoo is an open wound. As it begins to heal and seal itself some light scabbing will form and then flake away over a 1-2 week period. This is often accompanied with some itchiness.

  • Always have clean, dry hands when applying your aftercare cream. Avoid touching your fresh tattoo throughout the day.

  • Never re-wrap your tattoo in cling film. If you must have it covered, loose cotton clothing is best.

  • Your tattoo will continue to heal and settle for another few weeks. During this time the tattoo may still be sensitive as skin layers heal and form.

Things to Avoid

  • Exercise/excessive sweating in the area that could promote infection for the first 5 days.

  • Picking/scratching your new tattoo.

  • Swimming/soaking your new tattoo for the first 2 weeks.

  • Wearing tight clothes/shoes that rub or irritate your tattoo for 2 weeks.

  • Getting your tattoo sunburned.

Your tattoo is ‘lived in’ and will continue to soften and settle over time. Daily moisturising and the use of sunscreen will help prevent your artwork from fading.
